Mr. Mathias Petschke, director of DG TAXUD, presented the most. Important elements of the proposal to reform customs in the EU tabled by the European Commission. More efficiency, transparency and uniformity in customs operations will strengthen the EU single market. Ms. Åsa Botes, customs attaché of Sweden, holding the European Council’s presidency, provided initial remarks from Member States’ perspective, pointing out that a major assessment will be required as it touches upon key areas that are the competence of Member States. Mr. Ricardo Treviño, Deputy Secretary General at the World Customs Organization, congratulated the European Commission for these important efforts towards improving control and trade facilitation in the EU market.
